The initial scene of the movie explains and demonstrates the implication of the misfortune Marlin encountered. Nemo then has to prove to himself and his father that he is independent, by swimming to the drop off and touching the boat. To this, Nemo, like any son would, is embarrassed and acts in a rebellious manner. Furthermore, Marlin goes out of his way to discuss Nemo’s disability, his fin, with Nemo’s teacher. On Nemo’s first day of school Marlin asks, “Now, what’s the one thing we have to remember about the ocean?” to which Nemo responds, “It’s not safe.” Marlin also provides Nemo with other lessons, such as before leaving the anemone you go out and then you come back in to ensure it is clear. For example, Marlin provides Nemo with safety tips and lectures. There are many examples within the first 20 minutes of Finding Nemo that portray this relationship. He vows to never let anything bad happen to his son, and smothering Nemo is the approach he takes to accomplish that. The loss and tragedy of Marlin’s wife and all of his eggs, except one, that Marlin suffered at the beginning really explains his controlling nature.įollowing the barracuda attack, Marlin truly is the epitome of overprotective. Each of the rich, personable, and colorful characters interact among each other in different ways, helping to tell the story of Marlin and Nemo. The movie provides viewers with multiple characters who they can support, love, and relate to. Both the plot and the characters of Finding Nemo captivate audiences from all ages.
